You see them every now and then, and they perform spectacularly and require a bit more experience to use, but can still be learned fairly quickly. More expensive, more capable, but still fairly common. The Vive lineup is more like the Corvette. Inexpensive, widespread, easy to use, and performs fairly well. The Quest 2 is like the Ford Mustang of headsets. VD is a 2-3 hour burst of VR, and that is also something that can be off-putting.ĭude I could give a rats ass about the account bullshit, the reason I don't like Oculus now is because they went to an entirely for profit model and cut corners everywhere, and the software problems back that up. And I haven't even gotten to how quickly it burns through battery. The latency isn't terrible, but that's entirely dependent on you having an Ethernet connected PC and a good router that can handle the network speed. That isn't something a lot of users are going to want to do. I had to fiddle with the debugger and set specific values to get Alyx and other high GPU intensive games to stop looking like a plastic playroom. I enjoyed it a ton, but it created a graphics resource vacuum due to how it, the Oculus app, and Steam VR hold GPU resources. Wireless VR is a near-future I cannot wait to partake in. I also used Virtual Desktop, and it is phenomenal. It's the same reason the Rift S has so many issues, because it puts a ton of strain on one or two cables. One single cable is handling power, tracking info, video, and audio. Unless you got lucky and the USB hub on your motherboard can support all the power and data delivery requirements it needs. I literally have my quest 2 sitting next to me, and the link software is total garbage. What's "better" is gonna come down to what you want and how much you're prepared to pay. There's a lot of concern about Facebook gathering data, but if you pop open your user privacy settings, they're not collecting anything you'd be surprised to see PlayStation collecting. The head strap and IPD settings are probably the most memed about. The Quest 2 has very good tracking without lighthouses and is the only standalone headset worth discussing, but makes a lot of concessions to its price point. You can buy a wireless adapter for as much as Quest 2 costs, but you still need to use lighthouses. The Vive is a high end headset that suffers from an abysmal controller and lackluster hardware updates. FWIW, gun to my head, I'd say that the 5K Super is probably the best headset on the market by the numbers, but I've never actually used one. Their headsets all require wires and lighthouses. The thing is, there are a lot of reports that Pimax headsets require a lot of tinkering and trial and error to actually make work their software doesn't live up to their hardware. The 5K Super has a resolution that's smaller than the 8KX but better than anything else on the market with a stupefying 200 degree FOV and 180hz refresh rate. The 8KX has massive resolution (a 4K screen on each eye) but a relatively low refresh rate. If you want a super high end experience, Pimax basically takes the other pieces of the Index and pairs it with a better HMD. There's no clear cut winner at the moment. Schedule an AMA!
